Swissgrid and Terna Launch CH-IT Annual LTTR Auctions for 2027 and 2028 via JAO
ImplementationFollowing a public consultation, Swissgrid and Terna announced preliminary annual auctions on the JAO platform for yearly Long-Term Transmission Rights (LTTRs) in both directions of the CH-IT border: a Y+1 auction for Business Year 2027 (29 Sep–6 Oct 2026) and a Y+2 auction for Business Year 2028 (9–16 Dec 2026), offering Physical Transmission Rights as base products without reduction periods.
These auctions establish the concrete allocation mechanism and volumes for long-term cross-border transmission capacity between Switzerland and Italy, giving market participants forward visibility and hedging tools for two future delivery years and formalizing a bidirectional LTTR regime on this interconnector.
The move from consultation to scheduled preliminary auctions marks the operational implementation phase of a new LTTR allocation framework on the CH-IT border. The asymmetric volumes (100MW CH>IT vs 70MW IT>CH for 2027; 40MW vs 30MW for 2028) suggest directional congestion patterns being priced into the forward capacity allocation. As base products without reduction periods, these are relatively simple annual strips, which should support liquidity and straightforward hedging for cross-border traders, though the declining volumes into 2028 may reflect capacity being reserved for later, more granular auction stages.
